Medusa {Greek} considered to be a monster, a Gorgon. “In a late version of the Medusa myth, related by the Roman poet Ovid (Metamorphoses 4.770), Medusa was originally a ravishingly beautiful maiden, “the jealous aspiration of many suitors,” but because Poseidon had sexually assaulted her in Athena’s temple, the enraged Athena transformed Medusa’s beautiful hair to serpents and made her face so terrible to behold that the mere sight of it would turn onlookers to stone.” [x] Another myth suggests that she fell in love with Poseidon and laid with him in Athena’s temple, the act being completely consensual. Alternatively,  early Greek writers and artists, simply portray her as a monster born of a monstrous family. [x] Medusa was killed by the hero Perseus with the help of Athena and Hermes. He killed her by cutting of her head and gave it to Athena, who placed it in the center of her Aegis, which she wore over her breastplate. [x]
