These delicious cakes are best left in the garden for the Elemental Folk on nights such as Samhain or Lammas.
½ cup sweet Muscat wine 2 tablespoons fine brown sugar 1 large egg ⅔ cup flour ½ teaspoon poppy seeds ⅛ teaspoon ground cinnamon ⅛ teaspoon ground nutmeg ⅛ teaspoon salt Sunflower oil for frying
Mix the egg and the Muscat wine in a bowl. In a smaller bowl, mix together the flour, poppy seeds, cinnamon, sugar and salt. Stir this into the egg mixture. Let it stand for about ½ hour. Combine the nutmeg and honey in a small bowl. Heat some oil in a frying pan (about ½ inch in the bottom) until it’s hot. Drop the batter into the oil one generous spoonful each time and fry until golden. Place on paper towels to drain and then dip into the honey mix. Delicious!

• Things you should NOT put outside! •
Chocolate: I see lots of blogs recommending this but do not leave it outside! It’s bad for any animals who could eat it.
Glitter: It’s basically spreading lots of tiny plastic pieces that will not decompose and will end up in water where it will be eaten by fish. Some companies like EcoSparkles make biodegradable glitter alternatives.
Salt: Will kill any grass, moss, and plants it falls on.
Jewellery: Unless it’s natural stones/shells/wood beads strung on a biodegradable thread, don’t do it.
Glass jars: They’re the same as if you tossed a beer bottle into your yard. If you really need to bury one, put it in a plant pot and dig it up again the next day.
Plastic trinkets
Essential oils: Strong oils like peppermint and rosemary will burn or kill plants.
• Things faeries don’t like as offerings •
Man-made mirrors
Clothing
Bread (some fae are fine with bread, others it offends)
Metals (excepting silver and gold)
Tomatoes
On Consistency: I’ve seen lots of people saying you must always leave gifts at the same time, but you don’t need to worry or feel guilty about this! Just do it when you can, and refresh things when you remember.
Faery blessings! 💜
Great post! I wonder about the clothing thing though. There’s a tradition of people in Scotland tying clootie cloths at sacred wells and trees as offerings for healing. So, not clothing exactly but cloths or rags should be okay, yes? If you want to hang clootie cloths, make sure to be aware of material content. A lot of modern clothing is petroleum based (Like acrylic and polyester). If you’re going to leave cloth offerings of any kind, use untreated natural fibers like cotton, wool, hemp, silk (REAL silk) etc.
Dearest Manannan, While my words are not shore, I praise you this day oar night.
Somefin is amiss when I do not sing to your diveine, and I am gillty of this, but today I am pier for you and all your shimmering forms. I raise a sea-glass to you, and seal this prayer by saying: Blessings upon blessings to you, And puns are a beach.
They call your blade Fragarach, the Answerer, and they say that when it’s held to the enemy’s throat, no lie can escape their lips.
Manannán, in this time of darkness and confusion, of “alternative facts”, of reporters being assaulted and jailed, we call upon you. Protect your own, as you have through the ages.
Help the truth, somehow, endure and be brought to light. Shatter the cups of those who would hide their corruption, and leave them parched. Merciful king, may mercy be shown unto us.
I go for a walk/jog every day. A few days ago I decided to go around 9 pm. It had been raining most of the day, but it was nice then, peaceful. The air felt wonderful as it tugged at my clothes and hair.
And fog lay heavy all over the ground. Off in the distance, close at my feet… everywhere I looked. And as I walked the streetlights shone golden, like man-made fireflies lighting my path. As I walked and it got darker, my feet treading a path I know quite well, a sense of liminality overcame me.
Sounds seemed almost muted. I ran my hands over plants and felt the cool rain drops cover my skin. Not a person was out and about. I felt as if I could and would walk straight onto another plane.
It felt magical. And for some reason I can’t get a grasp of, Manannán’s name kept occurring to me, like a song at the back of my head. Quiet, yet persistent.
In conclusion: what u want, Manannán?
That’s his kind of weather, mist and darkness. He may have just wanted to share it with you.
Alternatively he’s after tea. At least my experience.
