They call your blade Fragarach, the Answerer, and they say that when it’s held to the enemy’s throat, no lie can escape their lips.

Manannán, in this time of darkness and confusion, of “alternative facts”, of reporters being assaulted and jailed, we call upon you. Protect your own, as you have through the ages.

Help the truth, somehow, endure and be brought to light. Shatter the cups of those who would hide their corruption, and leave them parched. Merciful king, may mercy be shown unto us.

“To stand at the edge of the sea, to sense the ebb and flow of the tides, to feel the breath of a mist moving over a great salt marsh, to watch the flight of shore birds that have swept up and down the surf lines of the continents for untold thousands of years, to see the running of the old eels and the young shad to the sea, is to have knowledge of things that are as nearly eternal as any earthly life can be.”__Rachel Carson

I hope you don’t mind the ask but…how does one Manannan? What do you do if he’s just sort of persistently hanging around? He seems kind of great, but also I am very not good with new things. How do?

I never mind questions. I have long accepted that modding a 101 blog is basically throwing out a welcome mat. Sorry it took me a couple days to get to this, but I wanted to be able to have the time and focus to do it properly.

Obviously, I’m biased, but I agree that Manannán is kind of great. He’s incredibly generous, compassionate, and protective. He’s not afraid to bend the rules a little in order to do what’s right. And, at least in my opinion, he has an awesome sense of humor. He’s a little dark and brooding and melodramatic at times, but hey, aren’t we all?

He tends to be really understanding, so if you haven’t already, you shouldn’t be afraid to say hello and ask if he wants anything in particular. While he does demand respect (and will respect you in return) he doesn’t really demand formality, as exemplified by all the parties he crashes as a homeless dude in the myths. (In fact, I’m pretty sure part of his random homeless dude agenda is to help people respect everyone regardless of station.)

He does have a tendency to troll people, but unlike some other trickster deities, his trolling is almost always well-intentioned. I can see it being frustrating to people who haven’t been inundated by tricksters for most of their lives, but…think of it as his way of showing affection.

But enough of my UPG. Onto some more practical how-tos.

  • My Manannán tag. Very UPG heavy. Somewhat NSFW. Occasionally NSFAnyone.

Hope that helps somewhat. If there’s anything in particular you need help finding sources on let me know and I can try to point you in the right direction.

This is really well said and I’ve had a similar experience of Him and His personality.

He can also be incredibly intense and transformative in your life. It isn’t always pretty and sometimes it had felt as if He was pushing me beyond my breaking point, but He had led healing the deepest wounds of being a child abuse survivor. And when He really did push me to a breaking point – always a necessary break, like revealing a limb that healed wrong so it could be reset properly – it was He who comforted me.

There is so much to Him, but kindness and love have always been His motivating factors. And choice. I chose to accept His path to healing, He did not force it upon me.
