The Salmon of Wisdom appears in the Fenian Cycle of Irish mythology, the series of stories that tells of the hero Fionn mac Cumhail. Born an ordinary salmon, it swam in the Fountain of Wisdom, out of which five rivers flowed. Around the Fountain grew nine hazel trees, each of which dropped one hazelnut into the Fountain. The salmon ate all of the hazelnuts and from them gained all of the knowledge in the world, which in turn could be gained from eating the Salmon.
